Although I don't like Emerson's writing (long, wordy, and superfluous), I enjoyed his phrase "transparent eyeball."
Besides it being quite a silly image, it does have some meaning to me.
The transparent eyeball seems to look past what mere rods and cones depict--it's seeing and understanding beyond face value and first impressions.
Take it for what it's worth. I'm just glad that in my 50-page reading assignment last week, Emerson wrote one interesting line.

Sad that all that reading yielded one good line you remember. Now that you're graduated, you don't even have to remember that! ;)
